About Us

The club is run by Master Peter James (4th Degree Black Belt) - an upstanding and well known member of the local community in Newport and it's surrounding areas. Peter is Senior Head of Service within Gwent Music Support Service for local schools and colleges who spends most of his spare time teaching Tae Kwon-Do and Trampolining back into the community.
Peter started training in Tae Kwon-Do in 1993 under Master Phil Burley in Newport, and has been a fully qualified black belt instructor since 1996. Peter also has previous experience of Jujitsu and other self defence martial arts.
In 1998, Ponthir School of Tae Kwon-Do opened with 8 students and was based in Ponthir Village Hall. Since then the club has come a long way and has grown dramatically, now operates out of both Ponthir and out of UWIN Caerleon campus with over 70 students.
Since the clubs inception, Ponthir have enjoyed excellent competition results, including local, British and European champions and have been represented at the World Championships on numerous occasions. We have also seen excellent grading results, promoting 30 people to black belt standard since 1998 with this number set to increase more in 2010.
Peter is also the Secretary of Wales TAGB and ensure that the close liaison between Ponthir and it's affiliates both in Wales (Newport and Cardiff) and the rest of the TAGB remains.
Peters goals for Ponthir Tae Kwon-Do are to give as much back to the community and it's people as he can and ensure that the spirit and atmosphere of the club last long into the future.
